As probably no one knows, I now teach dance to a group of middle school girls on Saturdays in the studio with one of my dance friends. This is going on week 5, and this experience is teaching me so much. I'm going to start talking about it here because 1.it gives me something to write about that might actually be interesting/of use to other people thinking about teaching dance; 2.I'm in the middle of starting a dance program in New Orleans for low-income youth post-Katrina, and this gives me some valuable insight and practice; and 3. my "Black Freedom Struggle" class requires I discuss a protest action (which is my program), and this would serve as a good example of me learning what works and what doesn't work.
So far we have done:
- Step
- Kathak
- Swing
- Ballet/Jazz/Contemporary
This week coming up is African/Caribbean. I guess to be more specific(or general), I should say Pan-African, lol.
I'll be breaking down my recollection of each of these weeks, and what I've learnt thus far. For now, I'll just say that I LOVE being able to teach these girls, even though it saddens me that some Saturdays I have to leave Blueprint (my other mentoring program) early.
