Today was the first day of my internship with Freedom Schools New Orleans. It was an amazingly crazy day. Or maybe just crazy. There were about 80 children in the school, and 39 of them were all in one class. And they're all younger than 7. I spend half of my days as a floater, pretty much doing whatever they need of me while the children are immersed in an integrated reading curriculum. The second half of the day I teach dance. Today I taught the older kids a step, and some of the younger kids some basic stuff. I have never taught kids younger than 9 before. They're attention spans are soooooooooo short when it comes to dance, and my group had just come from outside. That being said, when I finally got them all together in a circle, they actually paid attention long enough for them all to say their names and something they saw today that made them happy.
After that, everything fell away, lol. Half of them paid attention, half of them were bored, and they all kept getting distracted. There's no way to keep order completely (although calling them to attention worked well a few times). I need to figure out a way to work around it, so that we can finally move a little to music.
Yesterday (Monday), my dad had a BBQ just because. Fred and Brad came with me after we went to see The Hangover 2, and after we ate we did some Umfundalai. It was a great workout. My legs still hurt (note to self:no working out the day before I have to teach). We were looking for music to dance to and Fred suggested this great song by Angelique Kidjo called "Aduoma". I love this song!
