Spring break so far has been so relaxing! And of course I'm still getting work done.
Saturday: Came in to New York.On the Chinatown bus. Crazy trip, as usual.Met two musicians on their way to a gig. Cool people, much better than the drug dealer/user LB and I encountered on our last trip.Ah, Chinatown bus...I may actually switch up to Bolt/Megabus. AFTER I use this free ticket from my last trip. =)
I got by my aunt's house, and encountered the first resistance to this hair. Unexpected, but eh. I've been jokingly called all types of horrible names by my family this week. Such is life. The best compliment? "Oh, you just went natural. I thought you were gonna come in with a fully shaved head, or something more dramatic.I like it." And that is why he's one of my favorite cousins.
Sunday:Church! Great to be at my second home. But...more comments about my hair...some stuff about me going "Afrocentric." Best compliment of the day: "You cut your hair............I LOVE IT! It fits your bone structure so well!" Thanks Pam. And to Auntie Joan and Sis. Jennifer. Support at its finest.
The thing is, I really didn't expect reactions when I got here, so I didn't prepare myself for it. I know the reason my mom disliked my hair, and it had little to do with me going natural. Her problem was that I was cutting my hair off, the hair that she prayed for while I was still in her womb. That, I understand. Dad,eh, he offered to chop it all off, and give me a bald cut. =) My roomies? Love it. Actually, LB's the one that cut it for me. And Tanni can't keep her hands out of it (btw, Tanni, I can twist my hair, but I can't reach the middle. Hair party when I get back home?). My bestie/sister Tai? Eh, she doesn't like it. Too short. But she's like "do you." So these reactions from my family were a lil unexpected, but eh, it's my head, and I look good.
The best parts of break so far? Going with my grandma to her appointments yesterday, and my Tyler Perry marathons from Sunday night to last night. I watched a 6 DVD set of his plays, and I still love em! Which I feel a lot of my college friends might disagree with. I don't care though. As a woman, native New Orleanian, southern, Baptist, Christian, from a family that reminds me a lot of people in his plays, I can definitely relate. I loved every play (although I skipped a lot of the songs this time around lol).
Hair: I washed with this Wen system stuff (it's pretty much a co-wash) my aunt has, then deep conditioned with creme of nature and dark and lovely conditioners. Eh, it was ok. The best part is, now that I'm actually paying attention to my hair and talking to my mom, she's sharing hair care stuff with me. Go figure. So my aunt gave me a box of her Virgin Hair fertilizer (that I hated when my mom used in my hair--too much= a very tingly, almost burning, scalp sensation). I put that in, some Pink hair lotion, a little gel, and gloss, and I think I've solved my scalp problem!I tried twisting it dry last night, and got to the middle before I realized that it's too short for me to get at on my own (and the middle's the part that needs twisting the most). So I let it out.
This post is a little long, so I'll wait until my next one to talk about New York, me as a growing adult, and what issues that may raise.
be.peaceful!
