It's so interesting to me how all of my classes seem to flow together and influence each other. I love it, and sometimes I realize this is why my classmates may think that I'm that know-it-all student sometimes. Really, I just have a tendency to get really excited when these connections are made, so I start nodding my head/smiling emphatically. For example: in yesterday's African I class, we spent about half of class sitting down and discussing Umfundalai technique, it's origins and philosophy. I was nodding and filling in things as the discussion went on, and it was really because I've been reading a lot about and theory from Dr. Kariamu Welsh Asante in my History of Dance:Africa and Asia course, so I understood her philosophy a little better, and the uniting principles that she lays out regarding African dances. I could also draw the relations of Umfundalai as a contemporary African dance technique to Dr. Welsh Asante's training in technique from Katherine Dunham, whose technique was influenced by a more Caribbean base, and how all of this may influence the more pan-African ideals shown in Umfundalai. It's all very exciting to me. We also talked about the Black Arts Movement, all stuff I'm currently reading about and developing a better understanding of.
And now, for the promised video of the day--Cecily's version of Adele's "Someone Like You"...also really beautiful and breathtaking. Enjoy!
